Volcan is a small town located in the mountains of the Chiriqui province, next to the Baru volcano. Wildlife and fresh air spread across the vast lands of Volcan. The town has beautiful private and public gardens and a host of small local souvenir stores.

Baru volcano is the tallest mountain in Panama standing at 11,398 ft. high. Baru is a dormant volcano yet potentially active, not a dangerous scale though. The last major eruption was back in 500 AD, which was obviously a long time ago. The volcano is high enough that you can see both the Pacific and Caribbean sea at peak point.

The rainforest is beautiful and never ending, almost magical. You’ll notice different animals flying across the blue skies and jumping from one branch to another. Volcancito can be lovingly referred to as Boquete’s little sister, though the people who live there would probably disagree. This small town is close to Boquete, although it is partially on the other side of the volcano, Volcan Baru. Both cities have an elevation of more than 1,000 meters, making their climate cool and refreshing. As Panama has increasingly become a tourist and retirement destination, Volcancito has begun to flourish, filling with foreigners who combine with the locals to create a diverse and interesting community.

As recently as five years ago, Volcancito was barely a wide spot in the road and definitely a place unknown to almost all foreigners. Although Boquete was already starting to grow and had an increasing number of foreigners, this development was not happening in Volcancito. The population there at the time was still predominantly local, Chiricanos mixed with the indigenous Native Americans in the area.

Fueled by the growth in Boquete, this trend has changed. Volcancito is now in a growth period of its own, thanks to developers whose clients wanted the refreshing climate but were not interested in living in an increasingly crowded Boquete. Volcancito’s infrastructure is developing and real estate around the area is selling.
In addition, Paradise Garden, Panama’s only animal rescue center, is located in the area. The facility is a 24-hour a day, 365 days a year operation where sick and injured animals are treated and released back into the wild. This is an interesting business and they welcome visitors to their center.

Volcancito may be geographically close to Boquete but the differences between the two are many. For foreigners looking for a peaceful place to vacation or retire, Volcancito might be it the perfect location to do so.
